Electricity is produced locally in Otaniemi using small-scale wind power and solar electricity. There is a 4 kW horizontal-axis small-scale wind turbine on the roof of Konetekniikka 4 building, as well as a 4.3 KWp solar energy system.
Other solar energy systems have been set up in the Open Innovation House building (18.6 kWp), Aalto Inn Researcher Hotel (5.1 kWp), Maarintalo (103 kWp) and in the Electrical and Communications Engineering building (4 kWp on estimate). In addition, there are some smaller solar electricity systems in use in the area, and at least one vertical-axis small-scale wind turbine in research use.
The information about the small-scale electricity production in Otaniemi have been collected in the table below:
The Aalto Inn researcher hotel uses a system where geothermal heat is used to produce ¾ of the heat demand, and the rest comes from the district heating network. Also the Saha building uses a geothermal heating system. The amount of thermal energy produced with geothermal heat in these two buildings is annually 100-200 MWh.
In the area, solar energy is produced in Konetekniikka 4 building as well as the Aalto Inn researcher hotel and the Electrical and Communications Engineering building. The produced total amount is 20,000-25,000 kWh per year.
